Kathy Southard, MSW, LCSW
Psychotherapy for Trauma, Life Transitions & Emotional Well-Being
Sometimes insight alone isn’t enough to create lasting change.
I offer thoughtful, compassionate psychotherapy for adults who want to better understand themselves, heal from difficult experiences, and create meaningful change in their lives.
With more than two decades of experience in mental health care, I integrate traditional psychotherapy with somatic approaches, EMDR, mindfulness, and experiential therapies. My work is collaborative and tailored to each person rather than based on a one-size-fits-all approach.
A Different Kind of Therapy
You may already understand why you feel the way you do. You may have spent years thinking about your experiences, relationships, or patterns—and still find yourself responding in ways you wish you could change.
Therapy can go beyond understanding.
Our emotions and experiences are not held only in our thoughts. They can also show up in our bodies, relationships, and automatic responses to the world around us.
My approach integrates conversation and insight with attention to emotional experience, the body, and the nervous system. Together, we can slow things down enough to notice patterns as they are happening and create opportunities for something different to emerge.
Areas of Focus
Trauma & PTSD
Trauma can affect how we experience ourselves, relationships, safety, and the world around us. It may contribute to anxiety, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting, shame, hypervigilance, or feeling disconnected from your body.
I have extensive experience working with trauma and PTSD and may incorporate EMDR, somatic approaches, mindfulness, and other evidence-informed therapies into our work.
Anxiety & Depression
Anxiety and depression can take many forms. You may feel persistently worried, sad, exhausted, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unlike yourself. You may be functioning outwardly while struggling internally.
Therapy can help us understand what is underneath these experiences while developing more flexible and supportive ways of responding to them.
Relationships & Life Transitions
Relationships, career changes, loss, aging, identity, illness, and other major transitions can bring important questions to the surface: Who am I now? What do I want? How do I want to live?
Therapy offers a place to explore these questions with curiosity, honesty, and compassion.
Personal Growth & Self-Understanding
You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from psychotherapy. Some people come to therapy because they want greater self-understanding, deeper relationships, more emotional freedom, or a life that feels more authentic and meaningful.

Experience
I bring more than two decades of experience as a clinical social worker in psychiatric, medical, community mental health, and trauma-focused settings.
My professional background has included work as a VA trauma therapist and clinical work within the psychiatry department of a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital.
Throughout my career, I have worked with people from many different backgrounds and at many different stages of life—from those experiencing acute psychiatric crises to people seeking deeper personal growth and self-understanding.
My advanced training includes EMDR, mindfulness-based approaches, somatic and experiential psychotherapy, and psychedelic-assisted therapy education and training.
Psychedelic Assisted Therapies
I'm a leading advocate of psychedelic assisted therapies. I'm working with colleagues and other Hawaii community groups to pass legislation which would make the use of such therapies legal in the state of Hawaii. I'm a MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies) trainee therapist and hopefully in the future, as these technologies become legal, I will be one of the first therapists able to use these medicines in the work I do. They can help heal people suffering from PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
I can offer a super-bill for out of network treatment.
